The date, carries the history of a magnificent variety from the Phoenician tree. The date palm (phoenix dactylifera) is believed to have originated in the Middle East where its majestic trunk and luxurious fronds promised water, shade, rest and food to hungry travelers in arid lands . Palms are flowering trees that fruit at the top, with a single bunch containing as many as a thousand dates. In the right conditions, a single tree might produce as much as 300 Kg of dates. Palms have deep roots capable of reaching water far below the surface. They may grow up to xxm (100 feet ) and live for more than 200 years. No wonder the date palm has become synonymous with hospitality, long life, fertility and prosperity; the original Tree of Life featured in holy books, folklore, art and architecture throughout the ages is an image of the palm tree.
Deglet Nour is the descendant of a long line of dates selected over the centuries for their succulent and fruity taste. The date culture originated in the Middle East and is several thousand years old. It then spread to the Maghreb between the 7th and 14th centuries.
It is in the majestic oases of the great Tunisian south that Deglet Nour dates are cultivated which means ``Finger of Light`` or which is also called ``Date of Light``. This is the most prestigious variety of dates, which takes its name from the fact that when ripe its flesh becomes almost translucent and in the sun we can distinguish its kernel.
The Deglet Nour date certainly has exceptional qualities, but it is also a very capricious date variety and requires a lot of care during its cultivation. Other date varieties, known as common dates, have an elongated shape and are generally dark brown in color.
